Pressure on CN to sign off on concept
Two years ago four Leadership Sea to Sky participants started an initiative to create a trail linking Pemberton and Mount Currie. It was quickly dubbed the Mount Currie - Pemberton Friendship Trail and the goal was to build a literal and metaphoric bridge between the two communities.
The entire project was inspired by the winds of Change: A Healing Vision Report created by the Pemberton/Mount Currie Drug and Alcohol Task Force. Maureen Douglas, Nathalie Klein, Jordan Sturdy and Sheldon Tetreault were keen. The proposed trail would be aligned with the current CN Rail right of way, which starts in Mount Currie. The length is about 7.2 kilometres from Mt. Currie to the Pemberton roundabout.

Winds of Change still blowing
Healthy community strategy moving towards addressing the need for substance abuse treatment
Published Date: 2006-09-21 Time: 07:12:08
By Cindy Filipenko
It’s a beautiful, sunny, Pemberton summer morning. Walking out of the post office, I run into an acquaintance I haven’t seen in months. Standing at the corner next to the Esso station, we catch up in the shorthand common to such relationships. Within a few minutes, we’ve covered the essential territory: work, kids, partners, summer plans and the quest for more downtime.
“You look great!” I say with all sincerity, because she does. There’s an energy and a freshness to her that I have never noticed before.
“I’ve been on the sobriety train since January,” she says, matter-of-factly. “And I’ve lost 20 pounds.”
Two women, who marginally know each other, candidly discussing an issue long kept in the dark, literally in the light of day. Maybe the winds of change really are blowing.

There are about 200 aboriginal nations in B.C., but less than 20 have their own treaties and about a dozen of those treaties were signed in the mid-1800s between the aboriginals and representatives of the British Crown prior to the province joining Canada.

“Ainsworth warns procedural delays are choking wood supply”, general manager of Ainsworth
Lumber, Brad Bennett appears to be pointing a finger of blame toward the St’át’imc Land and
Resource Authority (SLRA) for the impending lack of wood supply. For the sake of
clarification, the SLRA is the technical body to the St’át’imc Chiefs Council.

Dirty Redskins and the Columbus Handshake by Carter Camp

We all know that stereotypes hurt people and most of the time they are meant to
hurt and degrade. For we Indians one of the worst word
stereotypes is "Redskin" and it is always used with an adjective like "dirty" or "filthy".
Sometimes they use tricky, shifty, pesky,
ignorant, dumb and lazy to modify the ugly word "Redskin" but usually they go for dirty. This
has always bothered me because as a
traditional Indian man I know how much cleanliness has always meant to my people...

Andy Smith is a Cherokee woman, a co-founder of Women of All Red Nations (W.A.R.N.) and is active in the anti-sexual assault movement.
This article appeared in the Winter 1991 issue of Women of Power.
Other versions have appeared in various places. It is hoped that those of male gender reading
this do not feel excused because it speaks only
to "feminists" and white women. This version was written for a feminist publication; however,
Ms. Smith did not intend to exclude
anyone.

I'm not even looking at commerce and its role in the narrative history of human

The word "inherent" means that it already exists as a permanent and inseparable
element. It describes the continuing right of governing ourselves as an Indigenous People of the
international community. This right is particularly relevant here in BC where the federal
Indian Act system, with its reserves, election system, residential schools, etc was implemented
while decidedly sidestepping the underlying Aboriginal title matter.
